Christmas in Finland

inland is home of Santa Claus. He apparently lives in a city of Rauvaniemi in Lapland (the north part of Finland). To see a more real view of what santa is, take a look a the following video:

As I mentioned before I am very fortunate to have family in this country so far from my own. I was lucky enough to be able to spend Christmas and new year with family.

One of the things that keeps surprising me about the finns is the way they are very shy/humble about everything, nothing is extravagant or colorful or loud. It is very practical in a sense and I'm actually starting to like it. Nevertheless, it was impacting at first.

The Christmas trees and the decoration is something that will catch the attention of anyone that is coming to Finland for the first time. As soon as I heard that Finland was the home of Santa Claus, I was expecting to see millions of lights on the houses, huge trees, fireworks, decorations, and tons of events. Additionally, when I asked around all my hopes were confirmed. Some people even told me that Turku (where I live) is the christmas town, and that the biggest tree could be seen here. My expectations were very high as you can immagine.

Finally christmas days were close and I went out many times to try to find the christmas cheer and decorations. However, I did not find anything at all, even remotely close to what I had seen in Ecuador and US. Its not that I would complain, because I come from a family who does not really celebrate christmas so its no problem for me. However, from all the anticipation I really expected a lot more.

The biggest Christmas tree in Finland:

This following pictures was a funny one that sort of was my way of exaggerating how simple Finns are.

My university organized some Christmas carols sung by the student union choir. I have uploaded the following video: I want to wish you a merry christmas - from José Feliciano
